I am launching an ‘Ubuntu Fundraiser’ to support my beloved sangoma community. A number of my elders are sick with various illnesses and I am supporting them with money for medical treatment and food. Recently a close sangoma friend of mine shared a heartbreaking story of his uncle who was injured in a hit and run accident. This resulted in him getting both his legs amputated and having to move around now in a wheelchair. This horror story was ameliorated by the kindess and love of his community, in particular my young friend Gogo, who took him in and is currently looking after him.

The situation in South Africa in the rural areas like the Eastern Cape where I am from, is quite dire with unemployment over 50% of the population. My sangoma communities deal with joblessness by doing ceremonies and including unemployed people to give them hope.

While my sangoma community and elders struggle with material poverty they are wealthy spiritually and experience an abundance of magical dreams that open up the dreamtime portal to all of us. It is because of their generosity of spirit that I have been able to share the treasure trove of sangoma teachings overseas enabling many people to connect with their ancestors. One of their primary teachings is ‘Ubuntu’ which is an old South African Philosophy. It speaks about humanity; meaning ‘I am what I am because of who we all are’. As one person struggles, we all struggle; and our response is to help one another.

I would like to raise $3000 (USD) to support my sangoma community. The money will go towards food and healthcare. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. For donations of $20 and over I will gift you with a guided meditation involving me drumming, singing and invoking our ancestors who are holding us in their hands.

May the music of your people open your heart and dreams. 🦁

Warmest wishes,

John.
