The Way of the Leopard Workshop in Santa Fe

The Way of the Leopard: The Art of Listening & Feeling from the Heart of Africa

John Lockley is our guest all the way from South Africa. His life and work are testament to the power of the human spirit, and his teachings guide us to be empowered in a world of chaos. This retreat will be conducted as a ceremony, with chanting, dancing and meditating. A key intention behind John’s teaching is ‘uvula indlela’, opening the road i.e. teaching people how to find their purpose or calling in life through listening to their hearts, dreams and intuition.

John will teach what he calls the 3 Jewels of Indigenous Medicine.
1) Awakening the Heart through Heart-Beat meditation practice
2) Connecting with the Bones - Learning to honour and accept our Ancestors
3) Dreamtime training - Learn the ancient language of the Soul

He will lead the group in Heart-Beat Meditation practice, which involves moving like the Leopard from Stillness to Shaking, from head to toe. The Leopard is one of the main totem animals in Southern Africa amongst traditional healers because it represents raw, primal intelligence and intuitive understanding. In South Africa, the medicine people don’t speak about mindfulness but rather the art of listening. First, we listen to our own hearts then we watch the wind and the animals around us.

In order to listen effectively we need to stimulate our nervous system and WAKE UP. The retreat will involve trance dancing or ‘shaking medicine’ where John will show people how to energise their spines to awaken their intuition. “In order to feel like the leopard, we need to move and dance like the leopard”.

Benefits to Participants:
* Learn a new way to access your Heart-Beat to still your mind and foster relaxation
* Gain a deeper understanding of Ancestors and why it is important to honour them.
* Appreciate your Dreams and learn new ways to interpret & navigate this hidden world.

Pre-registration is required. Registration is $95 and can be paid at https://www.paypal.me/JohnLockley. A limited number of discounted tickets will be offered to those experiencing financial hardship.

Divinations & Healings in Santa Fe

John will be offering private healing sessions in Santa Fe.

Sessions offered:

Divination OR Plant Healing. Clients need to indicate which session they prefer. For plant healing John requires about 24 hours to mix the medicinal plants.

Do you want to connect to your Ancestors?
Are you spiritually lost and seeking Direction?
Do you often wonder what your Dreams are saying?

If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions then John can help you. John is an ancestral healer, diviner, and traditional healer from South Africa with over 20 years experience.

Divination: 'Throwing the bones'
As a traditional sangoma John is a trained 'diviner' and he receives messages from the ancestral world through dreams, trance dancing and 'throwing the bones'.

Each session is a ceremony whereby he chants in isiXhosa and creates a circle with tobacco. He chants the names of the client's ancestors into the circle. As the bones fall they create a constellation, representing the client's life. John speaks about the constellation, indicating the client's strengths and challenges. In keeping with the sangoma way, John often gives clients home-work involving private ceremonies or meditations.

NB: These are not fortune telling sessions, but rather sessions to help people discover their gifts, and overcome their challenges. The power of these sessions is dependent on the client’s intention to work on themselves. John is simply a guide. The stronger the client's intention to realise their destiny or life path, the more energy is given to 'the bones'.

Suitable for:
People searching for more direction in their lives, and a way to connect to their bones (ancestors).

Plant Healing
Clients place their feet in a mixture of plant medicine and warm water. They soak their feet for about 20 minutes. During this time John chants in isiXhosa, rattles and encourages the client to listen to their heart beat. Heat in the form of either incense or moxa sticks is applied to the soles of the feet to aid the flow of energy.
Plant healing occurs over three days. The first occurs with John, then the plant mixture is given to the client and John demonstrates how to use the simple mixture for days 2 & 3.

Suitable for:
People who are suffering from fatigue; trauma, emotional or physical.
These plant cleanses are also very helpful to aid in Dream recall.
* This is one of the primary techniques used by traditional healers throughout Southern Africa to cleanse the spirit and help people connect to their ancestors and dreams.

Cost: $195

About John Lockley

John is a traditional South African healer or Sangoma from Nelson Mandela’s tribe, the Xhosa nation. Sangoma's are traditional shamans or spiritual doctors. The Sangoma culture is one of the oldest living shamanic cultures in the world today.
John spent over 10 years apprenticing under Mum Ngwevu; a traditional Xhosa woman. He was one of the first white men in recent history in South Africa to complete the rigorous Xhosa Sangoma apprenticeship.

He travels the world teaching ‘Ubuntu’ (humanity) workshops, helping people reconnect with themselves, their ancestors and the natural world.

“In the Xhosa tradition I am referred to as an ‘igqira’, the medicine person who ‘holds the lightning rod of the ancestors’. What this means is that I am a lightning conductor or conductor of earth based ancestral energies. What this means for workshop or talk participants is that through me they have a greater opportunity to connect with their dreams and ancestors. It is not me personally, but rather the spirits around me. I am a simple medicine carrier.”

African Mindfulness retreat in LA

Mindfulness From Africa : An Authentic Medicine Man from Nelson Mandela's Tribe - A Daylong Retreat

Learn the Art of Listening & Feeling from the Heart of Africa

This retreat will be conducted as a ceremony, with chanting, dancing and meditating. A key intention behind John's teaching is 'uvula indlela', opening the road i.e. teaching people how to find their purpose or calling in life through listening to their hearts, dreams and intuition.

Mindfulness from Africa involves:

  1. Dancing – as we dance we feel our spirit move & connect to our Heart-Beat
  2. Connecting with our Bones – we are the sum total of all our Ancestors
  3. Listening to our Dreams – to truly connect with our soul we need to become    mindful of our Dreams

In order to listen effectively we need to stimulate our nervous system and WAKE UP. The retreat will involve trance dancing or 'shaking medicine' where John will show people how to energise their spines to awaken their intuition.

In South African traditional culture, it is each person's responsibility to connect to their 'Ubuntu' (humanity), and in so doing they realise their unique gifts and become effective members of their community. 'Ubuntu' speaks about US, SHARING, TOGETHERNESS. It is literally translated as, "I am what I am because of who we all are".

§  The ability to feel and listen to our Hearts will be honed through the practice of Heart-Beat meditation and trance dancing.

§  Connecting with Ancestors - John will speak about the importance of honouring our forebears because they have given us the gift of life. A simple ceremony will be conducted to improve our connection to our ancestors.

§  Dreams are the gateway to the spirit world. John will speak about the three levels of dreaming and some simple techniques to harness the power of our dreams.

Benefits to Participants

  • Learning the practice of Heart-Beat meditation
  • An appreciation of Ancestors and how through connecting with them we are connecting with our blood and all of humanity
  • The Ancient Art of Dream Interpretation as understood through the eyes of mystics and seers. John makes this easy to grasp through his teaching of the ‘three levels of dreaming’.

To Book please contact InsightLA (via this link).

John’s book, Leopard Warrior and audio cds ‘Way of the Leopard’ teachings, both published by Sounds True, will be available for purchase and personal signing.

Private Sessions
John will be available for private consultations after the retreat for healings, divinations and counselling/ mentorship. If you need more work with him please speak to the organiser and write your name down. Or you can contact John directly via info@johnlockley.com.

NB: Disclaimer
Please be aware that these techniques are powerful and have the ability to increase your emotions and ability to feel. In traditional South African ceremonies, all feelings whether positive or negative are seen as a good sign and indicate that the medicine is working. John is a simple guide and is not responsible for your emotional well-being. Please take full responsibility for your inner work.

Mindfulness from Africa, Talk in LA

Mindfulness From Africa : An Authentic Medicine Man from Nelson Mandela's Tribe - An Evening Talk

John will be hosted by InsightLA, a unique mindfulness meditation community.

Meet John Lockley, a traditional healer, Medicine man, Shaman (Sangoma) from one of the oldest Shamanic cultures in the world today, the Xhosa nation. John was adopted, apprenticed and trained by his Xhosa teacher, MaMngwevu and other elders for over 10 years.

John’s story is rich and evocative. His journey started at the age of 16 with a prophetic dream. A few years later he worked with Zen Master Su Bong, originally from Hawaii, an old friend of Trudy Goodman. John took part in Zen Master Su Bong’s retreats in South Africa and South Korea which helped lay the groundwork for his own spiritual teaching.

John will talk about his experience of mindfulness from his perspective as a traditional African healer from the rural areas of the Eastern Cape, the home of Nelson Mandela. Amongst traditional healers and elders in South Africa there is no word for mindfulness only ‘listening’ and how deep you can listen. To show that you are listening often requires a ceremony where the Great Spirit and communal Ancestors are honoured and loved.

Visiting Los Angeles for the very first time, South African, John Lockley, will also be talking about his book 'Leopard Warrior', published by Sounds True. This is an account of his remarkable journey in becoming a traditional African Shaman, known as a Sangoma, Diviner or Seer in Nelson Mandela's tribe, the Xhosa nation. It is a story about 'Ubuntu' (humanity), and it shows how in order for John to follow his medicine calling he had to go beyond the constraints of race, colour and social class. This is a ground-breaking book, pioneering consciousness study about African mindfulness, including wilderness work, indigenous shamanism & a deep exploration of dreaming to open your mind & expand your soul.

John will be available for book signings & private sessions.

Leopard Warrior teachings from Africa

LEOPARD WARRIOR TEACHINGS FROM THE HEART OF AFRICA

Join John Lockley, a traditional African Shaman known as a 'Sangoma' from the Heart of Africa, Nelson Mandel's tribe, the Xhosa nation. John will regale people with songs, stories and teachings from one of the oldest shamanic cultures in the world today.
The Leopard in African represents nobility of spirity and connection to both the natural and mystical worlds. Most African traditional healers work with Leopard medicine.

John's core teaching is about helping people to develop their instincts like a leopard and become spiritual warriors i.e. stand in their own power, dignity and connect with their innate humanity known as 'Ubuntu'.

Leopard Warrior Teachings involve:

 * Ancestors, how to connect to them, * Heart-Beat Meditation, the Art of connecting with our Inner landscape and * Dreams, Learning the language of our Soul.

John is a pioneer in bridging African traditional spirituality and healing with Western Psychology. His Xhosa name reflects this i.e. 'Ucingolweendaba' meaning the bridge or messenger between people and cultures. He apprenticed under his Xhosa teacher MaMngwevu, becoming one of the first Westerners in recent history to be given the honorary title by his elders and Xhosa community of 'ligqira linkulu' (Senior Sangoma).

Divinations in Portland

Honouring our Bones in Kerry, Ireland

The Way of the Leopard

Exploring our Bones, Opening our Heart

A two-day intensive Retreat At Aloha House with John Lockley.

We can only fully step into who we are as people once we take time to honour our Bones (Ancestors) and where we come from.

John is known as an 'Ancestral Healer', a sangoma from South Africa. He apprenticed for 10 years under his Xhosa teacher, MaMngwevu, becoming one of the first white men, in recent history to become a fully initiated Sangoma (traditional shaman) in the Xhosa Lineage of South Africa. This is the same lineage as Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.

Intention for this Retreat

To be-friend our Ancestors (Bones) so we can more fully step onto our life-path in this world and the next.

 The Way of the Leopard

African teachings speak about the importance of first connecting with our bones, heart and body in order to understand our spirit and path in life. The leopard teaches us about the innate intelligence of the body to help navigate our spirit in the world around us. John will teach aspects of the south African trance dance or ‘xhentsa’ to help people to activate their ‘umbilini’ (kundalini) centre and awaken their senses.

 Shaking Medicine

John brings his unique ‘shaking medicine’ dance to Germany. It is a powerful way to unlock your blocks, wake your body and connect to your soul. It is open to people with all levels of fitness, old and young. People move at their own pace. It is a joyful celebration of movement resulting in people laughing whilst dancing.

Ancestral Reconnection Ceremony

The whole weekend will be done as a ceremony. John will lead people in an ancestral re-connection ceremony. This is a simple process of placing incense sticks in an earth altar in the centre of the workshop room. Our ancestors are our gateway to the spirit world and we need to give thanks to them for the gift of life that they have bestowed on us.

Purification using Plant medicine

Participants will be cleansed with medicinal plants. This helps to remove energetic blocks so people can dream and connect with their life calling. This is done via the feet. Each person will place their feet in a bowl (square) of medicinal plants mixed with water.

Ancient Art of Dreaming

A core part of John’s teaching is Dream interpretation or as he says, “appreciation”. Our soul speaks to us through our Dreams, guiding us to live happier and more conscious lives. It is important for us to learn the language of Dreaming, the oldest and most universal language in the world. Sadly, this language is dying out and we see it in the destruction of the natural world. To bring it back all we need is the intention to remember our dreams and give them more respect and attention.

Participants will learn:

• To move & dance like the Leopard to become one with nature

• Heart-Beat meditation to still the mind and energise the body

• The importance of connecting with our ancestors (Bones)

• The 3 levels of Dreaming to reveal our destiny and uncover our calling

• The power of plant medicine to cleanse the spirit and energise the body

Exchange: €280 + accommodation.

'Leopard Warrior' - Free Webinar Series

Learn to Hear the Call of your Spirit

Dates: Sat 5th August, Sun 3rd September, Sat 30th Sep

Times:  11am to 11:30am  EST

Welcome to this unique series of talks & teachings by John Lockley from his upcoming book ‘Leopard Warrior’ and audio teachings 'The Way of the Leopard'.

Please write down your email address to subscribe to this Webinar series. You will be given a complimentary chapter from the book to get you started. The chapter is called ‘Ubuntu 101’ and it involves some of the key teachings in the book.

The leopard teaches us how to connect to the wild, untamed part of ourselves, and in so doing freeing our minds, bodies and spirits.

The leopard is one of the main totem animals used by traditional healers in Southern Africa because it represents nobility of spirit, independence and intuitive intelligence, and is constantly connected to both the spirit and material worlds.

In order for us to become more powerful, effective human beings, we need to become like the Leopard; warriors unafraid of the dark, with an ability to breath into all aspects of ourselves both hidden and seen.

Leopard Warrior is an alchemical story of transformation where John asked an existential question; the same question philosophers and mystics have asked for aeons. “What is my calling?” “How can I realise it in this world?” From a young age John was called to become an African medicine man, a sangoma. However being brought up in another culture and during the oppressive Apartheid era, it was extremely difficult for him to realise his calling. Fortunately, he did! And now he teaches people worldwide how they can find their calling and become warriors of light and healing in the world.

This webinar covers three main themes: The Call of Spirit, Connecting with our Bones (Ancestors or spirit world) , and the Language of Dreams (the Language of Spirit).

Webinar 1, 5th August

 The Call of Spirit

Sangomas are traditional South African shamans also known as traditional healers and diviners. To become a sangoma you need to receive a calling, which often involves a mystical illness. In South Africa this is called the ‘thwaza’. Ultimately sangomas are wounded healers. Their illness teaches them empathy and compassion opening to the world of suffering, spirit and magic.

Have you ever felt vulnerable, wounded and alone?

Have you ever pondered the sheer pointlessness of suffering and pain?

John will speak about the power of illness and suffering to help us find our own calling. Ultimately everyone is wounded and vulnerable and once we can accept this and breathe into it our life calling becomes clearer.

John will encourage the webinar participants to listen to their beating hearts and feel their own woundedness. When we can open ourselves up to our own vulnerability and essential mortality then our essential spiritual selves can appear.

Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the webinar.

At the end of each webinar participants will have an opportunity to book a private skype session with John.

6th August – private skype sessions – By appointment. Email info@johnlockley.com.

Webinar 2, Sun 3rd September

Connecting with our Bones (Ancestors)

Bone therapy or Divination is a powerful tool to help connect to your roots and strengthen your humanity.

* This the primary technique used by traditional healers throughout Southern Africa to cleanse the spirit and help people connect to their ancestors and dreams.

Cost:

One session;  €101

3 Sessions: $210

Ongoing therapy in Dublin

John will be available in Dublin for the next 4 months until October. He will be working from a healing clinic during the week in DunLaoghaire. He will be available to help people with their own Ancestral healing through divinations, plant healing and dream therapy.

John's Background

John's mother is Irish from Dublin, and he returns to Ireland to bring the wealth of traditional South African ancestral healing to his 'mother land'. This move has been inspired by his own dreams and connection to his Irish family.

John is a traditionally trained Sangoma (African Shaman) with 20 years experience; having received transmission from two different sangoma lineages, the Xhosa and Swazi. He is a member of 2 traditional healing organisations in South Africa.  He also holds an honours degree in Clinical Psychology and is member of the Irish Psychology association.

Way of the Leopard workshop in Dublin

In order to walk like the Leopard we need to learn to DANCE like the Leopard.

The Leopard is one of the most revered animal totems in Southern Africa because they teach us how to connect to our senses, the natural world and our humanity.

Do you want to WAKE UP, connect with your senses and answer the question of 'what is your life purpose' and 'why are you alive' ?

This one day workshop will focus on two key Leopard skills, STALKING & RESTING. The workshop will alternate between movement and stillness.

Participants will learn the ancient art of:

*'Shaking medicine'; how to shake the body and increase the flow of 'umbilini' (kundalini) energy. As the body heats up, so do the senses.

* Connecting with your Heart Beat. As the body rests after movement it is easier to feel the Heart Beat, and sink into our own primal rhythms.

* Honouring our bones (Ancestors). Like the tree, we all have roots. In order to know where we are going to in Life, we need to know where we come from. Ancestral veneration is part of being human, and is found in all cultures. As we honour our ancestors we honour the gift of life. This practice facilitates humility and gratitude, essential for any spiritual path.

* Dreaming. I will speak about the 3 levels of Dreaming, and how to TRACK ones spirit in the Dreamtime.

Cost: €101

'Way of the Leopard' talk in Dublin

This evening is about taking people on a mystical journey.  A journey that will allow you to go beyond language and all forms of dualism to help you find your life calling

Through a deep exploration of dreams, ancestors & your own heart beat, John will show you how you can find your way home to your true self.

Topics to be discussed: Ancestors, Dreams & how to connect to your own Heart Beat.

Life is simple. The first step to harnessing are senses and natural ability is to LISTEN to the pulse of life within us, then the next step follows effortlessly... Feeling our bones, connecting with our Ancestors and listening to our Dreams.

My intention with this talk is to show people how they can learn from the natural world, in the form of the Leopard, learning to stalk & rest. Stalk our spirit and listen.

My 'Way of the leopard' teachings is the answer to an old question I've had; "How to help people connect with their life who don't come from a traditional shamanic culture".  It is inspired by my Zen training, 20 year sangoma work and apprenticeship plus my own life experience.

Price: €15
